Proverbs 20:22

Trusting in God’s Justice

Do not say, ‘I will repay evil.’ Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.
-Proverbs 20:22

When someone wrongs us, our first instinct might be to seek revenge or repay evil with evil. But Proverbs 20:22 reminds us to take a different approach. Instead of taking matters into our own hands, we are urged to trust in the Lord and wait for His deliverance.

This verse serves as a gentle reminder to refrain from seeking vengeance. It encourages us to resist the temptation to respond to evil with more evil. Instead, we are called to trust in God's ultimate justice and rely on Him to make things right.

Of course, this doesn't mean we should ignore illegal or harmful behavior. If a situation requires intervention from authorities, we should seek the appropriate help. But even in those instances, our trust remains in God, knowing that He is ultimately in control.

The danger lies in our desire for revenge, which can consume our thoughts and lead us down a harmful path. Proverbs 20:22 warns us against this inclination and encourages us to trust in God's timing and judgment.

So let's pray for the wisdom to know when to seek help and when to patiently wait for God's intervention. Let's guard our hearts against the desire for revenge and instead focus on trusting in God's justice and mercy.

Ultimately, this verse reminds us that God works all things for our good, even in the face of evil. Let's praise Him for His sovereignty and trust in His ability to turn evil into good. And may we live in the light of the gospel, extending love and forgiveness even to those who wrong us.
